The 2005/06 season starts this week and the anticipation of the forthcoming battles among the competitors is already creating great waves of excitement through the table tennis fraternity. Fermanagh is now one of the largest competitive leagues in Ireland with 48 teams competing over 6 leagues.
The office bearers and committee for the Fermanagh Table Tennis Association for the incoming season are as follows: –
Chairman: Gary Nevin, Vice Chairman: Thomas McConkey, Secretary: David Keys, Match Secretary: Alan Coalter, Press Secretary: Geoffrey Slater, Treasurer: Victor Magee, Tournament Co-ordinator: Deirdre Slater, Fundraisers: Martin Carey and Dessie Elton. Committee Members – Mervyn Carleton, James Mayne, Tom Phair & Jeremy Lappin. The Ulster Table Tennis Branch has also elected David Wilson as the Western Regional Co-ordinator for the sport.
Both the new and outgoing committees wish to thank all sponsors for their support for last season.
League sponsors for the incoming season are as follows: – Div1 – Lough Erne Hotel, Division 2 – Speedy Registrations, Division 3 – Morgan & McManus Solicitors, Div 4 – L.E. Haslett & Co., Div 5 – OHS Trophies, Div 6 – S McBride Trophies.
Division 1 will certainly be an enthralling competition this season. Ashfield (Jack Stephens, David Erskine, Cyril Fannin) now with two Division 1 titles in succession, will have to be on peak form this season to secure the treble, especially with new opposition “Oonacream” from Eglish.
This new team consisting of Ivan Jeffers, Johnson Irwin, Mark Girvan, Mark McAllister and Trevor Montgomery has a wealth of talent and experience and without doubt will be out to take the coveted Division 1 title at their first attempt.
Drum A has strengthened their side with the new signing of Englishman, Geoff Davis. Sources have reported that Davis has played top level table tennis in England, however, Drum stalwarts, Thomas & Gordon McConkey and Wilfred Carleton are reluctant to divulge any information on the talents of their new player.
Letterbreen A has also increased their squad with more European flavour from Germany, as Silvia Cock teams up with her fellow countryman Torsten Jentsch and with the awesome talents of Jeremy Lappin and Wayne Crawford as the main driving force Letterbreen will also be looking for a share of the silverware.
Last year’s runners up, Fivemiletown remain unchanged as Davy Wilson, Tony Frempong & Mervyn Funston put on the armour once again to try and get their hands on the chalice this season.
Drumully will also have something to say before the final curtain comes down as they enter Division 1 this season with two teams. Maxi Carleton, Billy Stephens and David Hutchinson (Drumully B) promoted from Division 2 will undoubtedly be a force to be reckoned with and sparks will surely fly when they meet Drumully A (James Hutchinson, Andrew & Leroy Carleton).
Also newly promoted Churchill (Raymond Hassard, Trevor Thompson, Joe Cleary, Eric Hassard) cannot be overlooked, as these wily characters are very capable of upsetting the applecart. The FTTA is delighted that Monaghan has entered a team to contest for the Div 1 title this season.
Although Division 1 may hold premiership status, Divisions 2,3,4,5 and 6 will as usual prove to be hard fought exciting confrontations and some of the up and coming young players that contest these sections are surely destined to cause some major upsets this season especially in the Divisional tournaments
