English Table Tennis Association National Cadet League
South West Division

Results Day 2

Day 2 of this league was held on the 15th December 2002 and it was all change at the top of the table. At the end of this days play the positions would decide which teams would make up the two divisions for the second half of the season.

Cheltenham A started the day with a fine performance that was to see them control all of their matches as they remained unbeaten and in the number one spot. A three-point cushion could now be enough to take them back to the national finals.

Ferndale the former leaders found themselves slipping away and struggling with the loss of their number one. It showed as they could not hold off a thrashing from the two teams below them and moved them down to fourth.

Southampton West and Gloucester City were also teams on a charge. Gloucester were re-born with the help of Scott Johnson who was unbeaten for the day, he put on a great defence to hold off the swinging and looping boys from Southampton and bring their match to a draw.

Cirencester secured the last place in the top division for the second half beating their B team 5 – 1 and again the scalp of Ferndale.

At the other end of the table Oldfield Premiers rang into trouble as James Hardman was forced to retire early due to injury at the start of the afternoon session. Cirencester B fought and fought their way through the whole of the second days play but are still looking for their first Win.

The other Cheltenham teams did battle between themselves but there were no real big surprises.

The next round is scheduled for the 9th march giving all the teams the chance of some serious practice and improvement during the long winter rest.

South West Division

Results Day 1

The first day of the English Table Tennis National Cadet League South West Division, took place on the 20th October 2002 at Cheltenham Table Tennis Club.

The competition included new teams from Gloucester, Cirencester and Southampton, in addition to the experienced Ferndale from Swindon and Cheltenham A who entered last year.

The first day was made up of five rounds. In round one Cheltenham A thrashed Oldfield Premiers from Bath 6 - 0. Ferndale showed they meant business beating Gloucester City by the same margin. Southampton were also in contention by walking all over Cheltenham B to collect 2 points.

Round 2 showed very similar results, however Cirencester A and Cheltenham B scored points to put their teams on the scoreboard.

In the third round the game between Cirencester A and Cheltenham B proved to be very competitive but neither could pull off the win as both teams shared the points at 3 games all and one point each. Gloucester City triumphed over Oldfield Premiers who were still struggling to win a match but all was about to change.

The lunchtime break gave the Oldfield Premiers from Bath the chance to re-group and after hard discussions, came out guns ablaze to blast Cirencester B 5-1 and collect some much-needed points. The other teams started to feel the pressure with the odd game being lost here and there. Tom Putney from Cirencester A collected an excellent win over John McBeath the Southampton number one but it was not enough to stop his side sliding to a 5 - 1 defeat.

The final round brought a big title clash of Cheltenham A versus Southampton West, with Southampton's David McBeath scalping Michael Harvey early on to put Cheltenham under pressure. The Cheltenham side that finished third nationally last season played well enough to hold on to a 4 - 2 victory to take a well-earned 2 points. Ferndale proved far too strong again in this round and again cleaned up with a 6- 0 win over Cirencester B and the day belonged to them.

The next day's play is scheduled for the 15th December 2002 when the teams do battle to secure their divisional places before the teams are divided into two divisions.
