Swindon Table Tennis: League Update Division 3 : GWRSA G 5 / Ferndale D 5 With team captain Bob Adams on holiday, Alan Kimber was heading GWRSA's team and got the evening off to a good start by beating Jason Viola in 4 sets; but Ferndale's Stuart Hobbs evened the score when he beat GWR's stand-in Paul Carey in similar fashion. A surprise result ensued in the third game however, when 74 year old Keith Freeman beat Ferndale's team captain Ron White. Freeman took White all the way to 5 sets, and actually won it in the 5th 12-10. White was to have more problems when he faced Alan Kimber, when for the first time, Kimber not only beat White, but also did so in straight sets (11/8, 11/9, 11/9). With only one game left to avoid a personal zero, it was down to White to win against GWR's substitute Paul Carey, but this too was a huge struggle and Carey looked certain to win when in the 5th set, at 10 points to 4, he needed just one more point to win. At the last moment however, White regained his form and with grim determination gradually clawed his way back up to win the game in the last set 14 points to twelve.
Despite White's run of bad luck, Ferndale D did well on the night,
particularly as GWRSA G are 4 places ahead in the League table. 14 year
old Jason Viola had notable victories against both Cary and Freeman, and
Hobbs and White won the doubles to secure a final result of 5 games
each.
