Swindon Table Tennis: League Update
Nationwide A climb to the top ...
Nationwide A climbed to the top of Division 1 this week
thanks to a close fought match against Northside. Congratulations go to
team captain Dino Ciorra, who was the only player to win all 3 of
his games on the evening, with the remaining points for the victors made
by Pete Epps and Richard Jones, who also won the doubles. Northside
refused to let Nationwide win easily though, with 3 games going to four
sets and two (eventually won by Alan Duke and Tracey Hicks) going all
the way to 5. Duke and Hicks also won the doubles, while their team
captain John Nash gained a point off of Epps to make the final score
6-4.
... but Injury Time for Nationwide B
Even in table tennis injuries occasionally happen. But two
people injured during the same match is almost unheard of. The problems started when
Gavin Brown of Ferndale B, took on Steve Carpenter of Nationwide B. With
Brown two sets up, Steve Carpenter was on the defence and backing away
from the table in order to play a defensive chop. The shot had to be
played low, but with his momentum still going backwards Steve lost his
balance, smashing his knee to the floor and having to retire from the
match. Less dramatic (but just as painful), Nationwide's Ray Butt won
his first game against Brown, but during his second game against Dave
Bottomley, realised he had developed a twinge in his back. Carrying on
despite the pain, the twinge gradually got worse and Ray had to bow out
from the match as well. With no player's left, team captain Dave Evans
had no choice but to concede the doubles to Paul Johnson's team, leaving only 6 games played
out of 10. Ferndale offered a rematch but Dave's team decided to call it
a day and leave the score standing at 8-2 to Ferndale.
