Swindon Table Tennis: League Update
One player down but GWRSA H go on to win
Division 3 :
GWRSA H 6 / St. Saviours B 4
At first sight it may have appeared an easy match for the GWR team, with
St. Saviours B at the bottom of Division 3 and GWRSA H at that time in
third position. However the figures are misleading as St. Saviours were
only at the bottom due to a number of rearranged matches still to be
played, and their best player, Julian Steele-Davis, was the only person
left in the Division to have not conceded a single game. Greatly
increasing the odds in St. Saviours favour on the night was the fact
that GWRSA H had to play with only 2 out of 3 players, automatically
conceding 3 of the 10 available points.
Despite all this, somehow GWRSA's Barry Duke and Mark Hobbs managed to
win the match, with Duke beating St. Saviour's Vicki Pepper and Harvey
Groves, Hobbs winning all 3 of his games, and the two of them winning
the doubles. Most significant was Hobbs' win against Julian
Steele-Davis, breaking his unbeaten run of the season. The result moves
GWRSA H to the top of Division 3.
