Swindon Table Tennis: League Update

Variety is the spice of life

Division 4 : Ferndale F 5  / Ferndale G 5

One of the things that make table tennis such an interesting game is it's variety. Take Division 4's Ferndale F for example; consisting of John Maxwell, his 16 year old son Jo, and pensioner Ken Hawkes. John is a bulldog of a player, who's middle name is not subtlety, who just won't give in. Jo is good at forehand topspin and likes to attack, and Ken plays using a backhand style popular over 50 years ago.... but it works for him, so why change it? Between them they are currently in second position in Division 4, and not to be underestimated.

Ferndale G on the other hand consists of John Elliott - a player with amazingly fast reactions who simply stands close to the table and tries to get the ball back more often than his opponent; young David Lennehan - a relative beginner who has won some points already in his first season, and Vic Saunders - another newcomer, but also Ferndale G's secret weapon! Vic hasn't been able to play much this season due to shift-work and also illness in his family, but thanks to his loaded sidespin serves and hitting from the baseline, he's won every game he's played.

The match between the two teams was a spirited encounter, with the outcome of the evening turning on almost every point. Notable matches that went all the way to 5 sets included Ken Hawkes beating John Elliott, John Elliott beating John Maxwell, and perhaps the most impressive, Jo Maxwell taking two sets off of Vic Saunders before eventually losing in the 5th.

At the end of the Singles games Ferndale F were winning 5 - 4,  and it was up to Jo and John Maxwell to hold their lead against Vic Saunders and David Lennehan. In a close match, Vic and David just turned the tables to make the overall result of the evening 5 points each.
